The Gun Facts project maintains a database of U.S. mass public shootings (MPSs). This database uses the original criminology definition of MPS: four or more people are killed in a single location, not including attackers.
The Gun Facts MPS database has two elements that were first found in this database (though other researchers have replicated our efforts). This includes:
- Determining if any of the weapons used conformed to the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban criteria.
- If the event was a “cattle pen scenario”, which is a unique Gun facts observation about what makes MPSs more deadly.
We have also incorporated data from The Violence Project database (e.g. if events were planned).
