Top 15 Murder Counties — 9 Comments

  1. Thanks for this illuminating look into the heterogeneity of murder rates and the possibly-causal factors.
When a study such as this does multiple regression analysis with so many independent variables (11 here) it can be very helpful to look into the relationships between those independent variables using Principal Components Analysis (PCA). In some cases this greatly simplifies the multiple regression analysis and the interpretation. It won’t always do this, but sometimes can be really helpful.

    • Thanks.

PCA might be a bit much for this study, but we have a huge project in the planning stages and PCA might have some significant utility in that one.

  2. This needs to be done by ZIP CODES. In Minneapolis, for example, Hennepin County has over 100 zip codes but 98% of the murders happen in (or are committed by residents of) only 3 – 55411, 55412, and 55404. In 55411 and 55412 100% of the victims are black and 98% (excluding justified by police) of the murders are black.

The cause is NOT skin color, it an amalgum of social deficits that poisons the local culture.

    • The white murder RATE is 1.6 per thousand making the rest of Hennepin County (and Minnesota) rank in the lowest 5%.

    • That would be a detailed study, but gathering that data would be beyond herculean on a national basis.

  3. “We firmly believe there is no genetic predisposition to criminality.”….however, this goes against existing data that blacks have lower IQ, lower impulse control and lower culture for success….

    • We specifically said “genetic”.

People are a product of both nature and nurture. You can take someone with no genetic predisposition and through operative conditioning make them antisocial, stunt their IQ, etc.

In American inner cities, this is likely the situation. Thus your (uncited) data may be measuring the results of inner city operative conditioning and not any genetic baseline.

  4. As a retired engineer, I appreciate the huge effort it takes to do this kind of regression analysis, and it’s rare to find. Thank you. Unfortunately, I don’t see the clear path to how this work will do anything to improve the situation in these counties; mainly because the people most likely to be able to affect changes will happily ignore everything in your study if it doesn’t agree with their goals and preconceptions. My experience is that although engineers and scientists understand how important such statistical techniques are in separating important variables from the chaff, as those scientists and engineers (and others) get promoted, or elected, into positions of power, they conveniently ignore the statistical results and do whatever is expedient for their own gain.

Sorry, but being cynical comes with being old and experienced. On the list of traits that enable a person to get elected, or that influence the voting habits of the average citizen, adherance (or understanding of) statistical analysis techniques is absent.

    • Don’t apologize about being cynical. A cynic is someone who has a disorder of the optic nerve that forces them to see things as they are, not how they wish them to be.

We at Gun Facts, thankfully, are not in the business of changing minds. We just find facts and provide perspective. If this piece has any effect it will be from citizens becoming educated and not buying into the ideological rhetoric or propaganda of some politicians and in turn not voting for them.
